The more you carry, the less you enjoy the journey.
If you've ever found yourself dragging a heavy suitcase up endless flights of stairs in a European train station, you already know this lesson.
After years of traveling, I've learned that packing light isn't about sacrificing style, it's about giving yourself the freedom to enjoy every destination.
Whether you're strolling through Italy, hopping trains across Switzerland, wandering charming villages in France, or exploring Japan, a thoughtfully packed carry-on will make your trip so much easier.
But Wait...Cruises Are a Different Story! Before anyone asks...
No, this is not how I pack for a week or more cruise!
Cruise vacations are an entirely different experience. Once your luggage arrives at your cabin, you unpack once and you're settled for the week. That means I happily bring a few more outfit choices for dinners, sea days, excursions, and those fun evenings onboard.
European land travel is all about mobility.
Why I Love Traveling with a Carry-On
There was a time when I packed "just in case..."
Extra outfits.
Extra shoes.
Extra everything!
The funny thing? I rarely wore most of it.
Today I travel with one carry-on suitcase and one personal item. That's it.
The benefits are worth it:
No waiting at baggage claim.
No worries about lost luggage.
Easier train travel.
Less lifting.
More freedom to walk, explore, and enjoy.
Most importantly, I spend less time managing my luggage and more time experiencing the destination.
European Train Travel Changes Everything
One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors to Europe is how much walking comes with train travel. Many stations have:
Long platforms
Cobblestone streets
Multiple staircases
Limited elevators
Quick train connections
You'll often be responsible for lifting your own luggage onto trains and carrying it through busy stations. A heavy suitcase quickly becomes your least favorite travel companion.
Light luggage means less stress, and a much happier traveler.
My Simple Capsule Wardrobe
Packing fewer pieces actually gives you more outfit combinations.
Before you pack a single item, choose your color palette. This is the secret that makes a capsule wardrobe work. I start with two or three neutral colors that all coordinate, then add one or two accent colors for personality. When everything mixes and matches, every top works with every bottom, and getting dressed each morning is effortless. It's one of the easiest ways to pack lighter while still looking stylish throughout your trip.
Here's my favorite formula:
Three Bottoms
Two pairs of pants - one jean, one neutral color and comfortable
One skirt
Five Tops
I keep it simple:
Two lightweight tops that double as layering pieces or undershirts - one can be a silky one, as you can dress it up or down
Two classic button-down shirts
One dressier evening top for dinners or special occasions
Everything mixes and matches effortlessly!
Shoes: Keep It to Three
Shoes take up the most room, so every pair has a job.
I bring:
Two pairs of comfortable closed-toe walking shoes usually a pair of tennis shoes, walking or leather neutral shoes.
One stylish pair of sandals that works for sightseeing during the day and dinner in the evening.
If one pair gets wet, you always have another ready to go.
Don't Forget Shawls!
A couple of lightweight shawls are some of the hardest-working items in my suitcase.
They're perfect for:
Cool evenings
Air-conditioned museums
Churches with modest dress requirements
Airplanes
Dressing up a simple outfit
And here's one of my favorite travel traditions:
Instead of packing lots of scarves, I buy one or two beautiful shawls while traveling. They're easy to pack, unique, and every time I wear them at home, they remind me of that special trip.
Wear Your Bulkiest Items
Instead of trying to squeeze your coat into your suitcase, wear it on the plane.
A classic trench, lightweight wool coat, or travel jacket instantly saves valuable suitcase space and keeps you comfortable in chilly airports and airplanes.
My Favorite Packing Tip
Instead of packing for fourteen different outfits, I pack pieces that work together.
Every top matches every bottom.
Every shoe works with multiple outfits.
The result?
Less luggage.
Less stress.
More confidence.
And somehow...you always look put together.
Travel Beautifully, Travel Light
The best souvenirs aren't the extra outfits you never wore.
They're the memories you made because you could easily catch that train, climb those stairs, wander that hidden street, and say "yes" to one more adventure.
Traveling light isn't about having less.
It's about experiencing more!
