Fit & Fun with Karen
Hello October!

Hello my friends,
October is here! After a busy summer, I love this time of year. The mornings begin to feel a little cooler, our routines settle back into place, and there’s finally a hint that fall might actually be coming to Texas!
October is also a wonderful reminder that wellness is about balance. We work on strength, flexibility and balance in class, but those same ideas apply outside the Lake Room too. A healthy life includes exercise and nutritious food—but it also includes rest, friendships, laughter, celebrations and simply enjoying the season we're in.
This month, I want us to focus less on doing everything perfectly and more on doing the things that keep us feeling strong, capable and energized.
Keep moving. Keep challenging yourself. And don't underestimate how much those little choices add up over time. Most of all, thank you for continuing to show up—not only for yourselves, but for each other. Our Fit & Fun group really has become a wonderful little community, and I am so grateful to be part of it.
Here's to a strong, healthy and happy October!
With love and gratitude,
Karen ❤️
HEALTHY TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Strength Matters More Than Ever
Strength training isn't about becoming a bodybuilder. It's about being able to comfortably lift your suitcase, carry groceries, climb stairs, get up from the floor—and keep doing the things you love.
Try to include strength-building activity regularly during the week. Light weights, resistance bands and body-weight exercises all count.
Karen's reminder: Never underestimate those little dumbbells. We know what they can do by the end of class!
Practice Your Balance
Balance is a skill, and like any skill, it benefits from practice.
While standing near a sturdy counter or chair, try balancing on one foot for 10–20 seconds. Switch sides and repeat. As you improve, gradually use less support.
A few minutes at a time is enough to make balance work part of your regular routine.
Take Advantage of Cooler Mornings
October is a great month to take some of our movement outdoors.
Walk around the neighborhood, enjoy the lake, work in the garden or simply take a few extra laps around the store. Exercise doesn't always have to happen in a gym.
Movement throughout the day counts.
Think "Add," Not "Take Away"
Healthy eating can become exhausting when we're constantly thinking about what we shouldn't eat. Try another approach.
What can you add?
Add vegetables to dinner. Add berries to breakfast. Add protein to your snack. Add another glass of water. Add a salad before your entrée. Healthy choices naturally begin taking up more room on your plate.
Give Recovery the Respect It Deserves
Exercise challenges your body. Recovery allows it to adapt.
Sleep, hydration, stretching and easier activity days are all part of staying strong. If your body is asking for a lighter day, listen.
Taking care of yourself isn't only about knowing when to push. It's also knowing when to recover.
Karen's September Challenge
THE 5-MINUTE BALANCE CHALLENGE
This month, we're keeping it simple.
Set aside five minutes, three days a week to work on balance and mobility.
TRY A FEW OF THESE:
Standing on one leg while holding a chair
Heel-to-toe walking
Slow knee lifts
Sit-to-stands from a sturdy chair
Gentle ankle circles
Calf raises
Put on your favorite music and make those five minutes yours.
Five minutes. Three times a week. That's it.
Small habits practiced consistently can make a big difference.
