Fit & Fun with Karen - November Edition

Hello, my friends!
November is here, and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, I find myself reflecting on the many things that make life so wonderful: good health, family, friendships, laughter, and the ability to keep doing the things we love.
One of the things I am especially grateful for is our Fit & Fun community!
Every time we gather at Quail Point Lodge, I am reminded that exercise is about so much more than stretching, strengthening muscles, or improving balance. It's about showing up for ourselves, encouraging one another, sharing a few laughs, and building friendships along the way.
As we move into the holiday season, our schedules tend to get busier, our meals a little more indulgent, and our routines sometimes take a back seat. And that's perfectly fine! The key is finding balance and remembering that taking care of ourselves doesn't have to be complicated.
A little movement every day, nutritious meals, plenty of water, and a positive attitude can make a meaningful difference.
This November, I encourage you to celebrate what your body CAN do rather than focusing on what it cannot. Every stretch, every step, and every effort counts. And remember, staying healthy isn't about perfection. It's about enjoying life while making choices that help us feel our best.
Thank you for being part of this wonderful Fit & Fun family. You make every class special! Wishing you a beautiful November filled with good health, gratitude, and plenty of reasons to smile.
With love and gratitude,
Karen

HEALTHY TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy & Enjoy the Holidays!
Keep Your Muscles Strong
As we age, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important for balance, mobility, and independence. Resistance exercises using light weights, bands, or your own body weight help support everyday activities.
Karen's tip: Aim for muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week, adjusted to your abilities. Those little weights we use in class really do count!
Take a Walk After Thanksgiving Dinner
A short, comfortable walk after a meal is a wonderful way to get moving, enjoy fresh air, and spend time with family. Even 10–15 minutes of gentle walking can help support blood sugar management.
Karen's tip: Invite someone along. Exercise is always more fun with company!
Enjoy Thanksgiving Without the Guilt
Thanksgiving is a celebration, not a test of willpower! Enjoy your favorite dishes, savor every bite, and remember that one holiday meal doesn't define your overall health. Try including colorful vegetables, lean protein, and satisfying portions of the foods you love.
Karen's tip: Eat slowly and enjoy the conversation. And yes, there is room for pumpkin pie!
Don't Forget Your Water
Cooler weather can make us less aware of thirst, but our bodies still need proper hydration. Keep a water bottle nearby, drink regularly throughout the day, and add lemon, orange slices, or fresh mint for a little flavor.
Karen's tip: Start your morning with a glass of water before your coffee.
Practice Gratitude Every Day
Gratitude isn't just for Thanksgiving! Taking a few moments to appreciate the good things in life can support emotional well-being and help us focus on what matters.

2 minutes of sit-to-stands or supported squats
2 minutes of calf raises and gentle balance work
2 minutes of stretching and deep breathing
Thanksgiving-Inspired Turkey & Sweet Potato Skillet

This month, I wanted something comforting, nutritious, and full of Thanksgiving flavors without spending hours in the kitchen!
This colorful skillet combines lean ground turkey, roasted-style sweet potatoes, spinach, warm spices, and a sprinkle of dried cranberries and pecans. It's a wonderful weeknight dinner and a delicious way to enjoy fall flavors.
Ingredients
1 lb lean ground turkey
2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into small cubes
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 yellow or red bell pepper, diced
2 cups fresh baby spinach
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon dried thyme
½ teaspoon dried sage
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup low-sodium chicken broth, plus more as needed
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons dried cranberries
¼ cup chopped toasted pecans - optional
1/4 cup of mozzarella cheese
Directions
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground turkey, break it apart with a spoon, and brown a bit. Add the diced sweet potatoes, onion, and bell pepper. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic, paprika, thyme, sage, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
Pour in the chicken broth, cover, and cook for approximately 8–10 minutes, until the sweet potatoes begin to soften. Add a splash of broth if the skillet becomes dry. Cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
Stir in the spinach and cook until just wilted. Sprinkle with dried cranberries, toasted pecans, and top with mozzarella cheese. Place under broiler to melt cheese a bit. Enjoy!
Karen's Healthy Tip:
Sweet potatoes provide fiber, potassium, and beta-carotene, while lean turkey delivers protein to help maintain muscle. Spinach adds vitamins and minerals, and pecans provide satisfying crunch and unsaturated fats.
Have leftover Thanksgiving turkey? Skip the ground turkey and use about 3 cups of chopped, fully cooked turkey instead. Add it near the end and heat until steaming hot.
